ABX ALERT
Introduction
ABX ALERT is a web-enabled application, which automates collection of patient specific data required by microbiologists and pharmacy clinicians involved in antibiotic stewardship activities. Integrates with ICNet’s premier healthcare associated infection (HAI) surveillance and case management software.
The core data, as obtained via real-time interfaces from the Admission, Discharge and Transfer (ADT), Laboratory Information (LIS) and the Hospital Pharmacy Systems (HPS), provides details of patient medication, dosages, and frequency of administration prescribed to a patient as well as the microbiology/serology test results obtained during the patient’s visit to the facility.
Through the standardised and customised alerts, robust reporting, statistics and analytical tools, ABX ALERT assists the clinician in treating patients with complicating underlying conditions/disease processes related specifically to their medical condition.
The system is focused on the antibiotics/antifungals/antivirals as described in the IDSA/SHEA Antibiotic Steward Position Paper (Guidelines for Developing an Institutional Program to Enhance Antimicrobial Stewardship, CID). This paper discusses several issues around stewardship to include optimal selection, dose, and duration of an antimicrobial, which results in the best clinical outcome for the treatment of infection, with minimal toxicity to the patient and minimal impact on the subsequent development of resistance.
